High-ranking delegation from Baku arrives in Athens
A delegation led by First Vice-Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov, Minister of Youth and Sport Azad Rahimov and Vice-President of the NOC of Azerbaijan Chingiz Huseyn-zade will be following the IOC Executive Meeting on Wednesday to announce the cities to be shortlisted as Candidate Cities to continue bidding to host the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and the XV Paralympic Games 2016.
Azerbaijan – in the running for the first time in its young history among world class cities – released its venue plans for the Games last week at a presentation with the Architects from AS&P, Albert Speer & Partner, Frankfurt.
The Minister of Sport was very clear in his statement: “We have submitted a strong Bid Book and worked hard for the last six months to convince the IOC that Baku has the potential to host such a mega event. We have confidence in the IOC and know that the competition would be a wonderful experience for our country. Our achievements would help Azerbaijan to create an awareness of its potential. The climate, location right on the Caspian Sea and close proximity of the venues create tailor-made conditions for athletes from all over the world.”
The Government has already decided on the building of 24 Olympic sports complexes in all provinces and the construction of an Olympic-sized aquatic centre as well as a multifunctional gymnastics complex.
