The Bid

For centuries, the image of Baku has been defined by the extraction of its natural resources, especially oil. Since the country regained independence in 1991 and the bulk of oil production was shifted to the Caspian Sea, the issue of re-use of former crude oil extraction areas has become a key focus of the development of both the city and the country as a whole.

The renaturalisation of the Bibi-Heybat oil field and its conversion into a lively, attractive and flourishing Olympic Park will bring back to Baku a real sense of the quality of life in the long term.
