Impressions from Baku
Built on a site inhabited since the Palaeolithic period, the Walled City of Baku is shaped by Zoroastrian, Sasanian, Arabic, Persian, Shirvani, Ottoman, and Russian civilizations. For this cultural richness it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The Inner City still has preserved much of its 12th-century fortifications like the defensive walls or the legendary Maiden Tower. The 15th-century Shirvanshahs' Palace is doubtless one of the pearls of Azerbaijan's architecture.
Near Baku one can find some of the first cultural and artistic traces of mankind: A great number of petroglyphs have been revealed on the rocks of Gobustan. As a tribute to the famous engravings, which are also inscribed on the UNESCO's World Heritage List, the design of the Baku 2016 Logo reflects these ancient symbols.
